Autobiography of Mark Twain, Vol. 1

“Evidently the N.A. Review is on shaky legs, for the Colonel asked Mr. Clemens to wait for the autobiographical monies that are due to him; to wait until the first of the year, for funds are low & he must borrow if he pays. It annoyed the King- for it is, as he says, “doing business through sentimental channels[“]- & he doesn’t like it at all. And it isn’t fair to the King.”

    1. I found your comment in my spam folder a week too late! I love him too! If you’ve read some of his later stuff, like “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court,” you’ll be better prepared for his curmudgeonliness!

    1. Generally, I find autobiographies inherently fluffed up and inauthentic (case in point: crazy Edith Piaf’s autobiography turns her life story into a snooze fest, because she was so busy trying to make herself sound respectable), but this was interesting to me because he insisted the autobiography not be published until 100 years after his death- so he could really be honest. Only it is so long I haven’t gotten to anything scandalous yet, just a lot about how cantankerous the “King” got in his old age!
